Through a collection of classic and
contemporary selections, students are exposed to literature that crosses many periods of
time and cultures. Study of short stories focuses on plot, character, setting, and
theme development. Along with short stories, students read drama, non-fiction,
poetry, and folk tales. Within their reading, students analyze the literature,
expand their critical thinking and reading skills, develop multicultural connections, and
enhance their writing ability.
Students study and explore language
through grammar, writing, speaking, and study of vocabulary. Emphasis is placed on
study of the eight parts of speech. Reinforcement of lessons comes through regular
journal writing, research writing, and public speaking.

Investigation of real numbers and rational
expressions takes place in eight grade in greater depth. Students analyze and graph
linear equations and inequalities. Study involves the ability to solve different
styles of equations such as systems of equations and quadratics.
Study expands on chemistry concepts
started in seventh grade. Lab experiments, hands-on activities, and classroom
discussion are key to the learning experience. In addition to chemistry, students
also investigate the human body and the wonders of physics.
Study focuses on United States History and
government from the period of reconstruction to the present time. A special point of
emphasis will include examination of the United States as a member of the world community.
Lessons focus on Catholic church history,
growth in awareness of God, morality, and their responsibilities that accompany a
relationship with Jesus. Lessons often include discussion and study of relationships
with God and each other. Students attend Mass twice a week.
Students continue keyboarding
skills. Using various computer software and skills, students complete projects
showing mastery of the media. A variety of input and output devices are used in
creating their projects. These projects often include the creation of databases,
drawings, spreadsheets and graphs. Proper use of the Internet, navigating skills,
e-mail, on-line terms and vocabulary are introduced.
Lessons expand on the foundation built in
seventh-grade Spanish. Students will be expected to master present tense, present
progressive, and simple preterit past tense. Participation is expected during
discussions of Spanish cultural topics, geography and science. Successful completion
of both seventh and eighth grade Spanish may be used toward high school credit.
Art is taught using Discipline Based Art
Education (DBAE) which includes art history, art production, development of the ability to
describe and express your own feelings about a piece of art, development of the ability to
criticize a piece of art constructively. Each grade level "scaffolds" or
builds on the grade level before it. Vocabulary and techniques used increase in
difficulty with the cognitive abilities of that grade level.
In grade eight, students work to prepare
for the more sophisticated demands of high school. Projects at this level are more
demanding as the students work on refining their art theories knowledge base. Upon
graduation, they should have these skills to take with them: self-discipline, problem
solving, self-expression, and keen observation skills. Career possibilities are
discussed.
In grades seven and eight, work in the
library is based a need to research projects. The incentive to read program
continues. Students are encouraged to check out fiction for recreational reading.
At this grade level, study continues with
music history and appreciation. Students look at modern music and composers as well
as write and perform more complex compositions of their own. Emphasis is placed on
musical terms, dynamic markings, tempo changes, intervals, and orchestra families.
Activities are planned to help students
develop skills for daily living and for the future. Lessons motivate each individual
to take responsibility in protecting, maintaining, and improving his or her own
health. This responsibility also extends to their being able to help to provide for
the well-being of the community to which they belong.
