Literature for seventh graders is based on
reading and study of several units which include short stories, drama, poetry, novels, and
essays. Critical thinking is stressed with special emphasis on active-reading
strategies. Vocabulary study is woven into each literary section. Special
projects coincide with each unit to enrich the study of the literature involved.
Reading of novels is encouraged through a reading program.
Students explore the written word through
descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive composition styles. Poetry will
be studied in depth. Students will be expected to expand their existing knowledge of
the eight parts of speech and learn to diagram sentences. Additional skills taught
include library and resource skills, study skills, test taking strategies, listening, and
speaking readiness.

Investigation of real numbers and rational
expressions takes place in seventh grade. Students analyze and graph linear
equations and inequalities. Study includes the ability to solve different styles of
equations such as systems of equations and quadratics. Probability and statistics
are explored.
Students will be encouraged to open their
minds to the world of science through a variety of hands-on activities, lab experiments,
and classroom discussion. Study encompasses a journey through the human cell, the
land of microorganisms, and basic chemistry.
Study focuses on United States History
from development of our country through the period of reconstruction. Students will
also closely examine the principles of the United States Constitution.
Students concentrate on an intensive study
of the New Testament. Lessons often include discussion and study of the sacraments,
prayer and God's plan for them. Students attend Mass twice a week.
Students continue practicing typing skills
through a tutorial program. With exposure to a variety of software, students often
explore word processing and CAD. Proper use of the Internet, navigating skills,
e-mail, on-line terms and vocabulary are introduced.
Students receive an introduction to and a
solid foundation in Spanish. They are required to speak and write this language in
class. This is accomplished through composition of sentences and paragraphs as well
as verbal description of situations and pictures -- all in Spanish. Some English
speaking is allowed at this beginning level.
Art is taught using Discipline Based Art
Education (DBAE) which includes art history, art production, development of the ability to
describe and express your own feelings about a piece of art, development of the ability to
criticize a piece of art constructively. Each grade level "scaffolds" or
builds on the grade level before it. Vocabulary and techniques used increase in
difficulty with the cognitive abilities of that grade level.
In grade seven, students work to refine
knowledge of theories and techniques from the past six years. New projects are
introduced, building on the past learning foundation. Career possibilities again are
introduced. This grade level is more critical of their art, looking for evidence of
and ensuring proper handling of the art theories.
In grades seven and eight, work in the
library is based a need to research projects. The incentive to read program
continues. Students are encouraged to check out fiction for recreational reading.
At this grade level, study expands to take
in music history and appreciation. Students examine compositions for structure and
meter as well as create their own. Emphasis is given to musical terms, composers,
notation, music styles, and various composers.
Activities are planned to help students
develop skills for daily living and for the future. Lessons motivate each individual
to take responsibility in protecting, maintaining, and improving his or her own
health. This responsibility also extends to their being able to help to provide for
the well-being of the community to which they belong.
